The Yankees had planned on starting Luis Severino in what was supposed to be a bullpen game, but manager Aaron Boone revealed on Saturday that they would instead go with Taillon, who had exacerbated an ankle issue in his last start on Tuesday but threw a good bullpen session on Friday.
Still, expect Boone to treat this game like a bullpen session, with a fast hook on Taillon if he’s having trouble. Taillon has a 6.75 ERA in his last seven starts, allowing seven home runs in 28 innings, and the Yankees would like to avoid having to play on Monday, which would mean starting Gerrit Cole rather than preserving him for the wild-card game.
The Rays have already clinched the No. 1 seed, meaning they will face the winner of the wild-card game in the division series. The most significant benefit they can anticipate is as many tiebreaker games as possible, allowing those clubs to burn through pitchers before reaching the ALDS. Kevin Cash should have all of his best relievers available with three days of rest before Game 1 on Thursday, but he won’t allow any of them reach a pitch count.
